If you park downtown, expect to pay more next year. The City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to raise caps on rates and fees, in some cases for the first time in 20 years. The hourly meter cap will eventually go from $1.50 to $2, starting at $1.75 next year along Phillips Avenue and at adjacent ramps that take credit cards.

The pays its own costs, including debt taken on from building additional parking. Finance director Shawn Pritchett said the fund is "going to struggle" without the changes.

  • Ramp fee cuts at First Avenue and East 10th start Nov. 10
  • Recommended: meter enforcement until 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, next year
  • Fee caps will track the consumer price index each year

Fines are rising too, and meter bags will cost more. The city also plans to be more restrictive in granting them. Child's Play Toys owner Nancy Savage said bags have taken up four or five spaces in front of her shop on a Saturday. The city next has to notify the council and the public that parking fees will increase at the beginning of the year.
