COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Oak View Branch Library, closed four months for renovations, will reopen Mon., Dec.22 with updated study rooms and an improved entrance (with enhanced safety and a new sculpture), and then host a free open house Wed., Jan.7 at 3700 E. Third St. to celebrate its 20th anniversary.  City of Sioux Falls
  • The Sioux Falls metro area invites locals to festive outings including Dell Rapids’ Christmas Crawl on Dec. 20 (10 a.m.), with special treats at The Meeting Nook, a preview of Tashi’s Yarn Bar, and a kids’ bowling contest at Pinz on Dec. 28 offering diverse local experiences during the holiday season.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Sioux Falls pet rescues are asking for holiday donations at giving trees at Best Care Pet Hospital and Pet Supplies Plus. Donations ranging from $10 to $500 will help care for homeless animals and boost foster care efforts.  KXRB
  • A Dell Rapids woman opened a temporary free store (On the House) at 415 E. Fourth St. to help neighbors; donations end Dec. 21 while the store stays open through Dec. 31 and a community dinner is planned for Christmas Day at 5 p.m.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Feeding South Dakota is relying on local volunteers to sort a surplus of food donations this holiday season (a response to tough economic times and SNAP interruptions) with sorted items headed to local pantries, schools and community partners.  KXRB

  • Miguel and Magdalena Jimenez will open La Huehueteca Bakery & Cafe at 2400 E. Sixth St. on the east side in mid-January or early February, offering Guatemalan breads, pastries, sandwiches and coffee.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Pasque Boutique at The Steel District announced it will close by Dec. 30 while offering 50 percent off merchandise (excluding permanent jewelry) during limited hours. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rydell School of Business at Augustana University introduced a trust minor this fall to prepare students for careers in the state’s growing trust industry & it requires 21 credits across seven courses taught by professors Gregg Greenfield and Laura Hybertson.  SiouxFalls.Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congress passed a bill on Dec. 11 that protects 40 acres at the Wounded Knee Massacre site on the Pine Ridge Reservation, prohibiting sale or lease without approval (a move designed to memorialize the historic event and support tribal self-determination).  Argus Leader

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society paused cat adoptions and owner surrenders after a suspicious illness was found on Dec. 16, nearly one month after canine distemper halted dog adoptions. Officials urge pet owners to vaccinate their pets to prevent future outbreaks (donations cover vet costs).  Argus Leader
  • Marsh McLennan Agency advised Sioux Falls residents to inspect roofs, insulate pipes, and check vehicles as cold weather raises risks of burst pipes, power outages, and slippery walkways.
