COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Feeding South Dakota is asking local residents for monetary donations and volunteer support to help feed families during the federal shutdown—its goal is to provide 500,000 extra meals while nearly 75,000 residents may lose food benefits if the shutdown continues, and it plans a Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway to serve 6,000 families.  Argus Leader
  • More than 75,000 South Dakotans will be affected when SNAP funds run out on November 1, and local groups including Feeding South Dakota, Lasagna Love and the Salvation Army offer food pantries and meal events to help those in need—KELOLAND will update the community as additional resources become available.  KELOLAND
  • The Banquet is hosting a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, November 27th, at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds Armory Building where runners, walkers, and families can choose a 1-mile, 5K, or 10K course to raise funds for community meals—no registration is needed while a $20 donation per person is suggested.  KXRB
  • Feeding South Dakota received 35,000 pounds of pork on Oct. 17 from the South Dakota Farmers Union because a government shutdown threatened food assistance programs. The donation will be distributed through local pantries (supporting over 113,000 food insecure residents) across the state.  Argus Leader
  • Residents in central Sioux Falls are gathering today at 5:30 p.m. at 9th and Grange for the ribbon cutting of Lincoln Commons—a new park developed from the old Lincoln Elementary School site that will offer a community garden, basketball court, gazebo, soccer field and play area for local families. The Sioux Falls School District worked with the neighborhood to keep this cherished green space from being repurposed for housing.  KELOLAND
  • Downtown Sioux Falls is ready for the holiday season with the return of the Downtown Gives Coupon Book, as over 22 local businesses including shops, restaurants + coffee spots take part. Coupons will be available from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 with redemption through March 31, and the proceeds will support Emily’s Hope.  KELOLAND

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The U.S. Bank building in downtown Sioux Falls will be mostly turned into an AC by Marriott hotel with over 100 guest rooms and new amenities while the bank branch remains on the first floor. The project is in the permitting stage and construction will take about 18 months—grand opening is planned for 2027.  KXRB
  • Pho Thai is expanding to east Sioux Falls by opening a new restaurant in the former Denny's building on East 10th Street where it will serve Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes with a similar menu to its other spots except for sushi. The updated restaurant (with refreshed decor and a repaved parking lot) is scheduled to open in late November to offer more convenience for customers.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Dokmai’s Sticky Rice, a locally owned restaurant serving Thai and Lao food, will open Saturday in the Empire Mall food court—its menu includes sticky rice, egg rolls, pad Thai and lemongrass pork steak. Owner Nouane Taylor said she will work alone on weekdays until she hires more help.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Luxury Auto Mall is renovating its Cadillac dealership to expand the 10,000-square-foot show floor and upgrade the service area, with the new design scheduled to open in April. The renovation aims to provide customers a modern experience—enhancing access to a broader range of vehicles including electric models.  SiouxFalls.Business

ECONOMY NEWS

  • WalletHub released its new job ranking where Minnesota ranked third for high incomes while South Dakota ranked first for low unemployment and short commutes. South Dakota placed fourth in job opportunities, 12th in job security, and 29th in both median income and job growth — showing a mixed job picture for local seekers.  KXRB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Promising Futures was founded six years ago by Steve Hildebrand to support 21 Sioux Falls schools with programs that provide books, field trips, and college visits to help students explore career options. The foundation will expand its services to 3 Rapid City schools next school year—Hildebrand says the local community has been key to its success.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Sioux Falls announced yesterday that Arrowhead House is now accepting reservations for public use—this renovated 2,440-square-foot house with a full kitchen, flexible meeting rooms, and a 3,000-square-foot outdoor deck is available for gatherings and events, with reservations managed by the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum team.  City of Sioux Falls
  • Today, the Sioux Falls Police Department is giving out free reflective strips to help trick-or-treaters, pets and cyclists stay safe on Halloween — the strips can be picked up at the Law Enforcement Center front desk at 320 W. 4th Street, open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  KXRB

HEALTH NEWS

  • The South Dakota Department of Health reported 87 West Nile virus cases and four deaths in 31 counties, noting that seven counties had positive mosquito pools as of October 29—10 blood donors were found with the virus while over 1,700 cases were reported in 45 states.  KELOLAND
