  • This Halloween, downtown Sioux Falls did not host the usual Zombie Walk but offered a new Zombie Prom at Remedy Brewing — the event raised funds for Sioux Falls Junior Roller Derby. Organizers announced plans to bring back the Zombie Walk next year to celebrate its 20th anniversary.  KXRB

  • The U.S. Bank building at 141 N. Main Ave in downtown Sioux Falls has a new owner who will convert most floors into an AC Hotels by Marriott hotel with a top-floor restaurant and lounge while keeping the first floor as a modern U.S. Bank branch. Construction will begin once a city permit is issued and is expected to finish this coming winter, adding up to 125 rooms with guest amenities like a fitness center and meeting spaces.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Sioux Falls' Dunn Brothers on West 12th Street will close on November 2 as announced on social media, adding to recent coffee shop shutdowns and leaving only one Dunn Brothers location on East Arrowhead Parkway—further reducing local options.  KXRB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sioux Falls welcomes South Dakota's first Catholic classical high school—St. Joseph Classical will open in fall on the Cathedral of St. Joseph grounds as part of the Chesterton School Network. Applications for ninth grade begin on December 1 and information sessions are set for November 13 and 18 at 6:30 p.m. at 523 N. Duluth Avenue.  KXRB
  • Juvenile detainees will be moved from the old facility built in 1969 to the new Juvenile Justice Center in the coming days—where the Sioux Falls School District will keep providing education on regular high school dates with improved classrooms and technology. The $50M center increases capacity from 40 to 64 and offers a better space with more housing units and support services for youth.  Argus Leader
  • Sioux Falls School District is buying older homes near Whittier Middle School to make room for a new school scheduled to open fall, with about 75% of the necessary properties already purchased—further public feedback and a bond vote are planned for spring.   • Clocks in Sioux Falls will fall back one hour on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 a.m.—ending daylight saving time for the year. Daylight saving time will resume when clocks jump ahead on Sunday, March 8.  Argus Leader

  • On Oct. 27, Avera’s new mobile mammography truck provided fast 3D digital screening with private dressing rooms—offering clinic-level care on the go.
