CULTURE NEWS

  • The Canton Lutheran Church received a $185,245 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation—money that will help restore its interior, exterior, and stained glass windows and doors. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Oldham-Ramona-Rutland school district announced a vote on December 16 to decide whether to dissolve the district after a petition by Rural Students, Real Opportunity and approval by the Department of Education and surrounding districts. The school board will set the election date at a special meeting on October 27 and absentee voting will run from October 31 through December 15, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (at St. Williams Catholic Church parish hall and Rutland school gym).  KELOLAND

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Sioux Falls Zoo and Aquarium broke ground on a new butterfly garden at the main building of Great Plains Zoo on Oct. 21—relocating the current butterfly house from Sertoma Park. The project, part of a 15-year plan and funded by a $25 million donation from Denny Sanford that requires a match, will complete construction by late next year or early the following year.  SiouxFalls.Business

  • Sioux Falls drivers face delays on South Minnesota Avenue this week—the northbound outside lane between West 14th and West 13th is closed today at 8:30 a.m. for window cleaning with additional closures today for concrete repairs between 28th and 29th and on Thursday for tree trimming between West 23rd and West 25th.  KXRB

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Dakota’s National Prescription Take Back Day will take place on October 25 as local drop-off locations at pharmacies, police stations, and community centers accept unused and expired medications for safe disposal—helping reduce the risk of accidental poisoning. Since 2016, over 113,000 pounds of medications have been collected statewide, and the event will build on that success.  KXRB
  • Chefs Ryan Tracy and Omar Thornton will compete in a secret-ingredient battle at Face It in the Fire on Nov. 6 at The District to benefit addiction recovery nonprofit Face It TOGETHER—providing free care for service-industry workers impacted by addiction.
