COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Community Blood Bank’s Blood Mobile will be at KELO-TV tomorrow from 7:30 to 4:00 for the Harvesting Hope Blood Drive, inviting donors—especially those with type O blood—to help address a continuing need. Donors receive a $20 Blarney Stone gift card and a pint of their favorite drink, and the drive takes only 30 minutes to potentially save multiple lives.  KELOLAND
  • Sioux Valley Energy will celebrate National Co-op Month by hosting a pumpkin-picking event on Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at Cherry Rock Farms near Brandon — offering hot cocoa and doughnuts for members. Southeastern Electric Cooperative will hold four member appreciation gatherings in November — on Nov. 5 in Parkston, Nov. 6 in Alcester, Nov. 7 in Viborg, and Nov. 8 in Lennox.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Sioux Falls students turned snowplows into art pieces at the Great Plains Zoo parking lot on October 11. Online voting for the top design runs until October 16 (winners will be shown in the Downtown Parade of Lights on November 28).  KXRB
  • On Oct. 13, three local nonprofits — The Compass Center, Family Services Inc., and Move to Heal — consolidated as Solace; they now offer integrated crisis intervention, clinical therapy and trauma-informed healing services from their new location at 2210 S. Brown Place.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • After a strong summer, Falls Park Farmers Market will move indoors and run a winter market twice a month at Mosaic Arts & Events—starting Nov. 15. About half of the current vendors will offer local produce and goods on set dates through April along with live music.  SiouxFalls.Business

  • South Dakota brewer Dakota Point Brewing in Rapid City won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver for its O'Quinn's Irish Red, a 5.7% ale with toasted caramel flavors—its second win this year following a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup.  KXRB

CRIME NEWS

  • Sioux Falls Police worked with Jaquin from Santee — who chased Gradester — to secure the horse that broke free after the Native American Day parade and raced down Phillips Avenue before being cornered at a nearby home.  KELOLAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Dakota first recognized Native Americans’ Day 35 years ago when Governor George Mickelson declared a Year of Reconciliation at the Crazy Horse Memorial and Oglala Sioux Tribe President Harold Salway urged unity in his remarks. Today, the holiday is widely observed with government offices and public schools closed — and events statewide honoring Indigenous culture taking place.  KELOLAND
  • Native Americans’ Day events in Sioux Falls began with a prayer ceremony led by Dustin Beaulieu at Lyon Park ahead of the downtown parade — the ceremony also included an honor song for parade grand marshal Dale Chasing Hawk that highlighted the community’s commitment to tradition and remembrance.  KELOLAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in Sioux Falls urged women to schedule mammograms during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to detect cancer early. The free All Women Count! program offers screenings at over 250 sites, including Avera clinics + Sanford facilities + mobile units that serve surrounding areas.  Argus Leader
  • Baby Catherine, born in Ortonville and battling severe pulmonary hypertension with heart, lung, and kidney complications, spent months at Sanford Hospital on a bypass machine and dialysis—her transfer was delayed by a snowstorm. Today she is improving, smiles with her sisters, and her doctors confirm that her kidneys now work normally.  KELOLAND

SPORTS NEWS

  • USD Football will debut new custom helmets for Native Heritage Day, with designs by Sadie Red Wing and Native Student Services—these helmets feature the word sungmanitu, meaning coyote in Lakota, and a motif for the Seven Council Fires. The team will wear them on Saturday, November 1, against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks at the DakotaDome as native alumni, students, and staff are recognized.  KELOLAND
