COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sioux Falls Noon Sertoma Club is raising funds for a $1-million project to replace the white jungle gym and sundial at Sertoma Park with a fully inclusive playground for all kids. The club will host Sertoma Fest tomorrow at The Alliance—an event with food, beer, and music—to boost support before planning to break ground next spring.  KELOLAND
  • Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is turning Falls Park into a bright Winter Wonderland with 25 miles of lights, 300,000 bulbs and 268 decorated trees—some of which have been reused from past years. The holiday display will open on November 21—an invitation for families to enjoy the season.  KXRB
  • Yesterday, Kim Hubers opened The Party Place at 405 E. Fourth St.—an indoor play area for children that offers toys, games, and treats just outside Sioux Falls.   • Great Bear Ski Valley will host its inaugural Welcome Winter Fest on November 8 from 10 AM to 2 PM, featuring a Ski Swap starting at 11 AM that benefits the Ski Patrol and scenic chairlift rides to enjoy fall foliage. Community vendors will offer winter sports equipment and expert advice — food trucks and a bar will serve tasty treats for visitors preparing for the season.  KXRB
  • Sioux Falls Fire Rescue highlighted important safety tips during fire prevention week—residents should check lithium-ion batteries for signs like swelling or improper charging and use only UL-approved products. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded to a grass fire at North Cliff Ave and East Chambers Street — 14 emergency vehicles were dispatched — as black smoke was seen on the live cam, and Sioux Falls Police reported the incident on Oct 9.  KELOLAND

  • Today, a downtown marketing firm transformed its office into a pop-up coffee shop at the Sampson House to celebrate 10 years in business. The firm offers free handcrafted coffee from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its space at 522 N. Main Ave., Suite 100—inviting community members to mark the milestone.  SiouxFalls.Business

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Sioux Falls is hosting the Pork Showdown—a month-long contest where 25 restaurants serve unique pork dishes. Locals will enjoy the event through October 31 and can cast their vote using the DTSF Digital Passport.  KXRB
  • On Monday, Native Americans’ Day is celebrated with a parade in downtown Sioux Falls that highlights Indigenous culture. The event starts with a prayer at Lyon Park at 9:00 a.m., followed by a fun run at 10:45 a.m. and the parade along Phillips Avenue from 13th to 6th streets at 11:00 a.m.—featuring about 40 entries.  KELOLAND
  • For Hispanic Heritage Month, four locals met at a park to celebrate their Hispanic roots — they expressed pride in their diverse backgrounds while noting safety concerns that led to cancelling local events.   • Sioux Falls city officials appealed their attorney fee dispute with Johnson Properties to the South Dakota Supreme Court on October 9—arguing that a different legal standard applies to the eminent domain payment for the property near Arrowhead Parkway and Six Mile Road that once housed the Alibi Bar.  KELOLAND
  • Former city council member Marshall Selberg announced his campaign for mayor of Sioux Falls and said he will bridge community differences to help the city grow. His formal campaign will kick off Wednesday, Oct 15 at 4 p.m. at The South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance—he is the fifth candidate running ahead of the June 2 municipal election.  KELOLAND

  • Select Specialty Hospital, a 24-bed recovery center on the campus of Sanford USD Medical Center, will close its Sioux Falls location by the end of the year — Sanford requires the leased space for expansion.
