COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sioux Falls will hold its 16th annual Paint the Plow event on October 11 at the Great Plains Zoo parking lot on South Kiwanis Avenue—local school groups will paint the city’s snowplows for the winter season after the event moved from downtown because of construction.  KXRB
  • This week marks National Fire Prevention Week as fire departments hold events from Oct 5 to 11 to teach residents about the risks of lithium-ion batteries and the need to check smoke detectors—an essential step in keeping homes safe. Officials also warn against leaving cooking and barbecues unattended to help prevent fires.  KELOLAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • Great Plains Zoo will host Zoo Boo on October 17-18 featuring VIP early entry, a sensory hour, a fire show, animal meet and greet, dance lessons and vendor trick-or-treat stations for family fun in Sioux Falls. It also notes the Spooky Seas event at the Butterfly House on October 25—where visitors join a photo hunt—and highlights a Snow Leopard cub display plus cartoon-themed Halloween decor at Costco.  KXRB
  • A Sioux Falls sculptor won the international 3D prize at ArtPrize on Oct. 6 for his work Persist, shown on downtown SculptureWalk since 2018 (he also won the People’s Choice Award with his piece Linger in 2023). His win gives local art international notice.  SiouxFalls.Business

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Postal Service will raise shipping rates next week in the Sioux Empire, adding up to $16 extra per package on many services—officials say the hike is due to higher holiday processing costs. The surcharges will end on January 18 when rates go back to normal.  KXRB
  • The Sioux Falls metro area's unemployment rate jumped to 2.2 percent in August from 1.7 percent in July, with 3,814 people reported jobless by the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation. The overall labor force fell from 179,895 to 176,989 and job openings dropped to 10,840—reflecting a slight contraction in the local labor market.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Sioux Falls CEOs showed less optimism in their business outlook as a mid-June survey found decreased hiring and mixed sales activity — over 50 local business leaders responded — with many expecting a rebound next quarter as interest rates and prices stabilize.  SiouxFalls.Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Dakota Department of Transportation said Monday that it is selling or leasing the 80.8-mile railroad line from Napa to Platte with offers for the 20.9-mile Napa—Tyndall segment accepted electronically. Key dates for the process are Oct. 15 for a line tour update, Dec. 3 for proposer questions, Dec. 19 for submissions, and Jan. 21 for the board review session.  KELOLAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local runners and community leaders, including Mayor Paul TenHaken, finished the 437 Project relay that covered 437 miles and raised a record $322,000 for the Helpline Center—highlighting the need for mental health support and inspiring people to seek help.  KELOLAND
  • A new mental health clinic opens on North Main Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls as part of MWI Health’s expansion—psychiatrist Dr. Clay Pavlis said the clinic offers talk therapy, TMS for depression, nasal esketamine and disability evaluations with the VA to improve local access.  KELOLAND

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gabrielle Hardie, a South Dakota native, has joined the senior national gymnastics team after rising through the junior ranks and she aims to compete in the 2028 Olympics—if that goal does not happen, she will try for 2032—while training with elite gymnasts like Simone Biles.  KELOLAND
  • Nine-year-old Miles Lunning from Brandon will compete in the Drive, Chip and Putt national finals at the Masters in Augusta next spring—he earned his spot after showcasing his putting skills in a Minneapolis qualifier. He practices golf for about seven hours each day and will join 10 other kids in his age group on April 5th.  KELOLAND
