  • Empire Mall (formerly known as Sioux Empire Plaza) celebrated its 50th anniversary on Sept. 24 with a ribbon cutting by general manager Dan Gies. The mall's rich history spans decades of community events (including store openings and holiday celebrations) and shows how retail has evolved in Sioux Falls.  Argus Leader
  • Downtown Sioux Falls restaurants will hold the Pork Showdown in October—over 25 restaurants will compete with new porkreations for a top prize. Local customers can vote via mobile phone at passport.DTSF.com—one restaurant will win the trophy.  KELOLAND

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Sioux Falls Starbucks near Jefferson High School will close by the end of this week as the company narrows its focus on resource allocation—more than 500 North American and several international stores will also be closed. This decision is part of a broader strategy to reduce the overall number of outlets.  KELOLAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bishop Donald DeGrood and the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese heard an appeal Thursday night to keep Christ the King school open after Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools announced its closure at the end of the current school year. The final decision will be made on October 10 (public comments were extended until October 2) as parents warned that closing the school would add stress to other Catholic schools.  KELOLAND
  • Keloland’s Rick Huffman shared a Flashback Friday video that takes viewers back to 1993—when a Sioux Falls apple orchard served as a classroom for lessons on math, manners, nutrition, and the apple business. The video shows children learning basic math with apples, sharing with family, and even visiting a petting zoo with six kinds of animals.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A South Dakota lawmaker from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for keeping the medals awarded to 19 soldiers from Wounded Knee, saying the decision celebrates violence—ignoring the pain felt by the Oceti Sakowin. Rep. Eric Emery said the move turns a historical wound into false pride—failing to separate honor from injustice.  KELOLAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sioux Falls residents raised $212,878.80 at the two-day Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon that ended Friday to support children receiving free treatment at Sanford Children's Hospital — local radio teams hosted 12-hour live broadcasts as volunteers handled calls and donations. The funds will help cover treatment costs for kids with cancer.  KXRB

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Cherry Rock Farms near Brandon is opening its pumpkin patch every weekend in October from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM to offer a day of family fun with free entry. The 100-year-old organic farm will feature a corn maze, hay rides, goats, and food trucks starting at 10:30—ensuring a busy day for visitors.  KELOLAND

SPORTS NEWS

  • Vargas Boxing is hosting its first amateur event—Downtown Throwdown—today at the Sioux Falls Family YMCA Y with more than 25 bouts planned as local and regional fighters compete. Doors open at 3:00 p.m. and bouts start at 4:00 p.m. with admission at $15 for adults and $10 for kids under 12.  KELOLAND
