Jim Mehlhaff proposed on Monday raising the sales and use tax from 4.2% to 6.2% to generate an extra $702M for K-12 public schools—aiming to reduce property tax levies for general and special education while keeping local levies for other needs. The plan, presented to the Legislature’s Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force chaired by Sen. Chris Karr, will be considered along with other proposals before the final meeting on October 22.
