  • Sioux Falls launched the Rick Norris Legacy Community Fund over the weekend to support the deaf community and help interpreters with emergency aid and professional training. The fund honors Rick Norris—who served as a kind and dedicated interpreter for decades—and will help address the interpreter shortage.  KELOLAND
  • Sioux Falls' Empire Mall will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Sept 24 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.—featuring special offers, historical displays, and a program—while its evolution from a small 1975 plaza to a bustling center with over 140 tenants highlights decades of community growth. EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Sept. 15 the 40th class of the Evan C. Nolte Leadership Sioux Falls program was announced when 38 candidates were chosen from 75 applicants to spend eight months learning local leadership skills.   • Photographer Ash Fechner captured the late-summer splendor at Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum on the east side of Sioux Falls on September 15th—vibrant green foliage was on display before the leaves turn color.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A construction company working with Tre Ministries asked the city to vacate 19th Street between Dakota and Minnesota Avenues after demolition began in December 2024 and the project was scaled down. The Mayor’s office-sponsored proposal will have its first reading today to review the revised redevelopment plan—potentially affecting local traffic.  KELOLAND

  • A group of volunteers from Reach In’s Caring Companions visit patients at Avera Behavioral Health during National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month to offer arts, crafts, and conversation to those struggling with mental health.   • A new study by ZOTA Professional Training shows that registered nurses are the most common job in South Dakota, with 14,500 employed and earning about $72,200 a year—bucking the national trend where fast food workers dominate in many states.
