COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 22nd Annual Truck Convoy for Special Olympics will roll into Sioux Falls on Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20 to celebrate trucking and raise funds for local Special Olympics athletes at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. Friday events include truck arrivals, registration, dinner, and a light show—Saturday will feature a truck lineup, convoy departure, auctions, and more activities.  KXRB
  • Sioux Falls residents can enjoy a busy weekend with Roots Fest today featuring free music downtown from noon to 8:00 p.m. — the Dakota Bowl starts at O'Gorman High School at 7:00 p.m. and retro skating is set for September 14, while the Falls Park Farmer's Market and Heartland County Corn Maze offer more fun through the weekend.  KXRB
  • Program director Rachel Kocak said the Rosebud Boys and Girls Club is using new ideas to fill funding gaps after their major grant was cut—by selling herbal teas and running an online charity auction. Other local clubs are planning partnerships to cover a budget shortfall for next year.  KTIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Midwest Street Medicine will host a cultural learning event Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at Union Gospel Mission to teach volunteers and the community about Native American traditions—guest speaker Tanya Grassel-Krietlow from Lower Brule will share her personal insights and snacks and drinks will be provided.  KELOLAND
  • Spirit Halloween opened on September 12th at 1431 W. 41st St with a haunted subway station theme—Madison Scare Park—that features a broken subway car and an animatronic rat. Halloween Express also reopened at Plaza 41 retail center at 2721 W. 41st St and offers a wide selection of costumes, props and a dressing area for trying on outfits.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • The historic Effting building in Sioux Falls, built in 1908 and used as a grocery store for more than 40 years before becoming the Perch Historical Kitchen, is nominated by the South Dakota State Historical Society for the National Register of Historic Places—its nomination highlights the building's long role in local history and its association with early women's work.  KELOLAND
  • Muralist Erin Castle painted an outdoor mural on Sept. 10 at Sioux Falls Food Co-op to honor spice and vanilla farmers for Fairtrade America's campaign celebrating international farmers. Store manager Becky Squyer said the project shows the co-op's support for ethical sourcing.  Argus Leader

  • Becky Haenfler, a middle school English teacher at Avon School District, was named the 2026 South Dakota Teacher of the Year at a banquet in Fort Pierre—she received a $5,000 grant and a $2,000 honorarium and will represent the state for the National Teacher of the Year award next spring.  KELOLAND

  • Meteorologist Scot Mundt says rain coming this weekend and next week will ease drought conditions in dry parts of western South Dakota and help areas facing moderate drought in the southwest and south central regions—73% of South Dakota is not in drought.  KELOLAND
