  • Organizers of Hungry Hearts said a fundraiser held on August 23 at The Barrel House raised over $150,000 in donations—this record amount will pay for school lunches for Sioux Falls students who do not fully qualify for free and reduced meals—and they expect more community support next year.  KELOLAND

BUSINESS NEWS

  • South Eastern Development Foundation helped small business owner Paul Ode quickly open the new Shenanigans Sports Bar and Grill in downtown Sioux Falls—using microloans that range from $20,000 to $250,000. The program, which grew from a goal of $1 million to an asset base of $27 million, will continue to support projects that local entrepreneurs might not secure with traditional bank loans.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Bride to Bride Wedding Co. opened east of downtown and offers consignment wedding attire and decoration items for brides, grooms, and other event needs & this store is one of five in the nation that provides all-inclusive wedding supplies at budget-friendly prices.  SiouxFalls.Business

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lakota Music Project will tour the state for free from Oct. 13 to Oct. 18, starting at Crazy Horse Memorial and ending at the LSS Multi-Cultural Center in Sioux Falls—six stops include three on reservations where audiences can experience a blend of Lakota drum music and symphony performances that pass on cultural traditions.  South Dakota News Watch

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sioux Falls has been awarded a $3 million grant from the Department of Agriculture and Forest Service to plant 2,500 new boulevard trees in eligible neighborhoods (on public right-of-way). Homeowners will receive letters with enrollment details and city officials advise against planting maple trees to boost urban diversity.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the state Board of Economic Development declined proposed rule changes to the South Dakota Jobs grant program (GOED finance director Jack Valentine led the reversal) after legal concerns were raised in public hearings and approved revised rules for the REDI program (to be reviewed by the Legislature’s Rules Review Committee on October 7).  KELOLAND
  • Rice Street between Cleveland Avenue and Veterans Parkway will be closed beginning Monday, September 22 for milling and overlay work. Traffic will detour via 60th Street North through Veterans Parkway and Cliff Avenue—one lane will remain open for local business access.  City of Sioux Falls

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Link Community Triage Center received its largest donation on Sept. 10 when the Greg and Pam Sands Foundation pledged $50,000 each year for five years to support those battling addiction and mental illness. Mayor Paul TenHaken said the donation—rooted in Sands’ own journey to recovery—will help the center continue its essential services for local residents.  SiouxFalls.Business
