COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Parkston is a finalist for a Levitt AMP grant that will offer $28,000 a year in matching funds for three years—supporting its popular Amphithursdays concerts at East Park. Residents can vote online or by texting until September 15 to help the town win the grant.  KELOLAND
  • Community members gathered at Covell Lake on Labor Day Sunday afternoon for a picnic honoring the 90th anniversary of the historic union strike—hosted by the South Dakota Regional Labor Federation. Speakers explained union roles, recalled events from Bloody Friday, and encouraged workers to work together.  KELOLAND
  • On Sunday the Toy Lending Library of South Dakota celebrated 10 years at Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls with families enjoying toys and superhero fun. Executive director Anelis Coscioni said the non-profit (which lets families borrow toy boxes for free) has grown to 21 locations and hopes to serve more children across the state.  KELOLAND

  • Sioux Falls business columnist Jodi wrote on Sept. 7 that local companies must start using AI to stay competitive—she warned that many family businesses lack the skills needed to adapt and could face economic challenges if they do not act soon.   • Downtown Sioux Falls is hosting the 62nd Sidewalk Arts Festival today—when the streets are closed to traffic for vendors selling art and handcrafted goods. Many vendors report strong business as shoppers spend over two hours browsing unique items, and artist Tom Montoya is now offering charcuterie boards.  KELOLAND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Black Hills Corp. and NorthWestern Energy announced on Aug. 19 that they will merge into a new public utility serving South Dakota and other states and expect to complete the merger in 12—15 months by the end of 2026. The merged company will be based in Rapid City and led by NorthWestern Energy’s CEO Brian Bird as Black Hills Energy’s CEO Linn Evans retires when the deal closes.  KELOLAND
