  • A Sioux Falls couple, Michael and Harriet Stuart, are planning a new living arrangement for their adult son Aaron with autism as they worry about his future care. They are promoting a plan—used in Michigan—where groups of parents share costs for a certified home staffed by a Community Service Provider and they urge other parents to join and reach out to lawmakers.  KELOLAND

  • A shopper in Sioux Falls discovered chicken paws in the meat section of a grocery store and learned they are used for making rich bone broth, soups, and pet treats. This discovery shows that local cooks are using every part of the bird—keeping old culinary traditions alive.  KXRB
  • Mone't Ernste—owner and lead artist of Oaka Morii—blends her florist background with her art to create pressed floral pieces, wood-burned designs and henna tattoos. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and teachers started classes at the new Marcella LeBeau Elementary School today—its opening meets a community need for expanded education facilities.  Argus Leader
  • The South Dakota Board of Education Standards canceled the public hearing on removing student growth goals from teacher evaluations and will keep the current rules for now. State Department of Education Secretary Joseph Graves said board members' concerns led to the decision and officials will review the policy later in the year.  Argus Leader

  • Levo Credit Union warned its Sioux Falls customers to watch for scam texts alleging bank notices—such messages come only from a 1-800 number and include the last four digits of a card, and the bank never asks for personal info via text or email.  KXRB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Dakota Public Broadcasting will lay off 15 employees by Oct. 31 due to a $2.2 million shortfall from federal funding cuts—the broadcaster will cancel its news radio program In the Moment and public affairs show South Dakota Focus while reducing Dakota Life output.  Argus Leader

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction began on Aug. 21 for the first phase of the estimated $200 million Founder's Crossing development in southeast Sioux Falls. The campus will offer about 40 villas starting early next year, a five-story multifamily building with independent and assisted living options, and plans for a Sanford clinic on nearly 100 acres along 57th Street and Veterans Parkway.  SiouxFalls.Business
