  • Young farmers Mason Prescott and James Bell left California and Georgia to start Grace Place Farm and Gardens and a church in Sioux Falls, growing a record crop on their 9 acre farm east of the city limits. The farm store will hold a grand opening this Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m.—selling produce, eggs and homemade goods to local outlets and through word of mouth.  SiouxFalls.Business

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local owner Leah Holtz runs her full-time snack business Leah’s EatZ, which makes caramel corn and paleo granolas for different tastes. She will sell her snacks this Saturday at the 605 Made Night Market in the Raven parking lot on Sixth Street and Phillips Avenue—using local feedback to develop new recipes.  SiouxFalls.Business

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Dakota has seen extreme weather with fast shifts such as in Spearfish on January 1943 when the temperature jumped from -4 to 49 degrees in two minutes—adding to records like a high of 120 degrees near Ft Pierre on July 15th, 2006 and lows of -58 at McIntosh and -42 in Sioux Falls. In Sioux Falls, the extremes include a high of 110 degrees on June 21st, 1988 and a low of -42 degrees on February 9th, 1899.  KXRB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Dakota Supreme Court declared a judicial emergency after state websites and telephone systems experienced technical issues since Aug. 19. The order issued on Aug. 20 suspends all filing deadlines and payment requirements until further notice — filings may still be submitted in person at clerk offices.  Argus Leader
  • Public school students return to class today and Sioux Falls Police urge drivers to slow to a 15-mile-per-hour limit in school zones amid heavier morning traffic and construction near Lincoln High School—reminding motorists to watch carefully for children at crosses and bus stops. Officers add that violations in school zones incur higher fines than regular speeding tickets.  KXRB
  • Minnehaha County Highway 148/267th Street will be closed (between 463rd Avenue and 465th Avenue) on Monday, August 25 so that crews can install a turn lane at the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill entrance. A detour (via SD Highway 42/265th Street) is in place, and the closure may extend into October as weather permits, so drivers should reduce speeds.  City of Sioux Falls
  • Sioux Falls property manager Matthew McKinley filed his candidacy on August 15 to run for the Central district City Council seat and aims to build a safer city by reducing the homeless population with transitional housing and a co—response program pairing police with mental health professionals; he praised the recent encampment ordinance and is the fourth candidate in the race ahead of the June 2 election.  Argus Leader
  • Following a lawsuit by Robert Elliot that showed many sidewalks did not meet ADA standards for wheelchair users, Sioux Falls is ramping up repairs across the city—officials say they are spending 2—3 million dollars on work this year while inspecting 10% of all sidewalks.  KELOLAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC now states that healthy children under 18 do not need the COVID vaccine while the AAP strongly recommends it for children from six months to two years, and Sanford’s chief medical officer Jeremy Cauwels said local pediatricians trust AAP guidance and find the vaccine safe—urging parents to talk with their doctor if they have concerns.  KELOLAND
