CRIME NEWS

  • Rosebud Police responded to an officer-involved shooting in the parking lot of an Indian Health Service facility on Saturday—a suspect sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and is receiving medical treatment while the FBI will serve as the primary investigative agency and the officer was unharmed.  KELOLAND
  • At the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, law enforcement reported high DUI and drug possession arrests on Aug. 3—38 subjects were jailed and 194 calls for service were made—and noted that traffic crashes increased 7% over the five-year average with no gun violence reported.  Argus Leader
  • The South Dakota Department of Criminal Investigation ruled that officers acted properly when they shot 24-year-old suspect Deondre Gene Black Hawk on July 7 near South Garfield Avenue after he fled during a search for his outstanding warrants and fired his handgun at them, and he now faces 13 charges in Minnehaha County.  Argus Leader
  • Fraudulent online casinos are targeting South Dakota players with cloned sites and false ads— the South Dakota Commission on Gaming warns residents to avoid sharing personal and financial information online.  KXRB
  • Sioux Falls police said a truck crashed into a home on the 1900 block of South Euclid Avenue just before 10 p.m. Saturday night—41 year old Derek John Arment was arrested for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and another charge after the truck struck a vehicle then hit a garage with no injuries reported.  KELOLAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • Disney on Ice: Frozen + Encanto will appear in Sioux Falls from November 21 to 23 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center and tickets will go on sale Tuesday, August 12 at 10:00 a.m. The show will bring favorite characters from both films to life for a magical family experience.  KXRB
  • Mosaic Arts — Events now operates in a historic downtown building built in 1887 and renovated in 2005, offering art classes for all ages including watercolor lessons attended by local children like 11-year-old Teddy Travis. The nonprofit also hosts community events and welcomes art supply donations to support its growing programs.  KELOLAND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Officials reported that in June the Sioux Falls metro area's unemployment rate rose from 1.7 percent to 1.8 percent with 3,248 unemployed people as the labor force increased to 179,124—keeping the region at the nation's lowest rate. Job openings also declined to 10,489 while the leisure and hospitality sector experienced an 8.8 percent rise.  SiouxFalls.Business
