  • Clarence ‘CJ’ Williams, a 34-year-old man from California who worked with partners from South Dakota, was sentenced earlier this week to 21 years in federal prison for distributing meth and fentanyl—authorities intercepted over 4 pounds of fentanyl from mail shipments.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After heavy rains caused flooding on July 23, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley warned homeowners to watch for repair scams by urging them to verify contractors and get written quotes (including checking business licenses) before repairs begin.  KXRB
  • Gov. Rhoden gave his weekly column to Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen, who urged lawmakers to approve building a new men's prison in Sioux Falls at a cost up to $650 million. He warned that delays are raising costs and set a special legislative session for September 23—where lawmakers will vote on the plan.  KELOLAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 25th, a crane lifted South Dakota’s first intraoperative MRI into Sanford Orthopedic Hospital on the campus of Sanford USD Medical Center — placing the 13,000-pound device next to an operating room and near Sanford Children’s Hospital for real-time imaging during surgery. The machine will help surgeons improve precision and patient safety as they prepare to treat patients starting Jan. 12th.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • At the Avera Cancer Institute, doctors said many patients ask about using anti-parasitic medications like Ivermectin for cancer treatment—although studies in animals have not shown that these drugs are safe or effective in people. They urged patients to talk with their oncologists before trying alternative treatments, noting that such drugs can cause serious side effects like liver failure.  KELOLAND
