CRIME NEWS

  • On July 17, a Sioux Falls man—Richard Carroll—threatened to blow up a business on South Marion Road after his loan was denied and was later arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat.  KXRB
  • Sioux Falls police said that on Monday, a woman near East Brennan Drive heard gunshots at 3 a.m. and found bullet holes in her garage & surveillance captured a white sedan firing rounds while another man near East 42nd Street and Banyan Avenue reported shots and saw a dark colored car fleeing & no suspects have been identified as investigations continue.  KELOLAND
  • Authorities investigated a two-vehicle crash in Beadle County that left one man dead Monday morning when a car failed to yield at a stop sign and was struck by a semi—this incident closed the eastbound lanes of US 14 for five hours.  KELOLAND

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers say fireflies are more numerous this summer in South Dakota due to a milder winter and wetter spring — conditions that improved larval development with moist soil and warm evenings; experts advise residents to reduce outdoor lighting during peak hours — a step to preserve the natural display.  KXRB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The southbound ramp from 26th Street to I-29 closes daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Friday — the Department of Transportation said the closure is needed to safely mobilize equipment into the work zone for ongoing repairs.  KELOLAND
  • South Dakota Public Broadcasting is preparing for cuts and layoffs after Congress canceled federal funding that made up about 20% of its budget. The broadcaster said if the funding gap is not filled soon, up to 15 jobs will be cut—Friends of SDPB CEO Ryan Howlett warned it is unrealistic to raise an extra $2.2 million on 75 days’ notice.  Argus Leader
  • The South Dakota Department of Transportation announced that starting July 24th the eastbound passing lane on the I-90 bridge over I-229 will be closed for asphalt resurfacing and guardrail installation—work expected to last until July 31st while the $3.1M project is completed by September 26th. This closure will impact interstate traffic in Sioux Falls.  KXRB
