CRIME NEWS

  • A Parmelee man was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release — he was convicted of assaulting, resisting and impeding a federal officer during a disturbance on Nov. 21st, 2024 and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.  KELOLAND
  • A Sioux Falls woman, 42-year-old Stacy Schaunaman, faces multiple felony charges for forgery and identity theft after she allegedly tried to cash thousands of dollars in fake checks starting in January 2025—police report her involvement in several fraud attempts against various banks.  KELOLAND
  • Two weeks ago, a break-in at In Flower and Daylily Coffee on East 8th Street cost the businesses thousands by stealing cash and tech—and now community members are showing support while police continue searching for the suspect.  KELOLAND
  • Minnehaha County is installing eight solar-powered License Plate Reader Cameras on a two-year trial in Sioux Falls to help police locate stolen vehicles—each camera connects to a national database that sends alerts when a stolen vehicle is near.  KXRB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, a group led by Misty Furness is collecting signatures at the Levitt, the farmers market, and the Comfort King parking lot to gather 6,500 signatures by July 17th to place the Sioux Falls School District’s $2.1 million opt-out on the ballot—this measure aims to override the school board’s decision to opt out of the state property tax freeze in order to boost funding for public education.  KELOLAND

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Parts of Sioux Falls have seen a rise in wasp activity this weekend and residents are urged to be cautious outdoors—local pest control has seen increased calls regarding cicada killer wasps that rarely sting while yellow jackets, which are more dangerous, continue to be a concern. Experts advise cleaning any sting with soap and water and monitoring for allergic reactions.  KELOLAND

  • Former city councilor Christine Erickson will hold a news conference on July 23rd—she will outline her future plans for Sioux Falls even as she did not confirm a mayoral run while two other candidates have already announced their bids. HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, measles cases in South Dakota increased from four to 12 as eight new cases were confirmed in Lincoln County with seven cases in children—five in adults. Officials said nearly all cases occurred in unvaccinated individuals and stressed the need to vaccinate to protect infants and others at risk.  KELOLAND
