- ➤ Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation announced that Jacobson Plaza on North Phillips Avenue will open Monday, June 30 with a 14,000-square-foot skating facility, a 26,000-square-foot playground, dog park and splash pad built with generous community support. The plaza includes a warming house, meeting space and paved sidewalks connecting it to local landmarks—bringing new outdoor recreation options to the community. KXRB
- ➤ Today, Sioux Falls offers a 100-mile ride for Emily’s Hope starting at 10 a.m. at J&L Harley Davidson that ends with a poker draw at Shenanigans Sports Bar at 5 p.m.—and a family bike ride with free rides for kids, free yoga at Jacobson Plaza, art and farmers markets, archery lessons, pool and water park hours, pop culture and auto shows, racing events, a military appreciation baseball game, and movie screenings. Residents have many ways to enjoy Saturday—whether riding, shopping, or watching movies, there is an event for all ages. KELOLAND
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A deadly crash in northeast Sioux Falls yesterday claimed one life and injured three others when a Chevy Silverado collided with a Honda CR-V on Madison Street just west of Kiwanis—police are investigating whether a lack of seatbelt use contributed to the fatality. KXRB
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Sioux Falls police said a shooting on June 22 near 12th Street and Summit Avenue resulted in 36-year-old Chris Deonte Folks Sr. being arrested on charges of aggravated assault and reckless discharge of a firearm while 35-year-old Jabriel Lamar Fears remains at large with a warrant for aggravated assault and a $250,000 cash bond—surveillance video captured a group gathering and the firearms have not been recovered. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Some Cold War fallout shelters in South Dakota no longer serve as public shelters (with signs removed and maps hard to find), though older buildings may still offer protection in emergencies. A modern option such as the Vivos xPoint bunker is available to families seeking off grid security with a runway and a single access road. KXRB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office is installing eight solar-powered, motion-activated license plate reader cameras to quickly match vehicle plates against security databases—privacy is protected by strict data safeguards. The project is funded by Byrne JAG Program funds and done in partnership with Flock Safety, and it will be reviewed after two years to decide if it will continue. KXRB
- ➤ During July, the South Dakota Highway Patrol will hold sobriety checkpoints in 17 counties, including Minnehaha and Yankton, to discourage impaired driving. Officials remind drivers to use a designated driver (or alternative transportation) if they plan on drinking. KELOLAND
- ➤ On June 27, Mayor TenHaken released a proposed 2026–2030 Capital Program that will invest about $1.1 billion in highways, public safety, utilities and parks, including a new fire station expected by the end of 2026. The program will use sales/use taxes and utility user fees to fund roadway upgrades + improvements to the water system + a future police report-to-work station planned for the east side.
