CRIME NEWS

  • State authorities charged 21-year-old Manarion Fuse for distributing a controlled substance that led to inmate Anthony Richards’ death on February 6th and arrested 49-year-old Melibu Ross for smuggling drugs that resulted in inmate Jason Garreau’s fatal overdose on May 14th—both actions part of an ongoing investigation into prison drug activity.  KELOLAND
  • Charges have been filed against a Sioux Falls woman, Melibu Ross, who is accused of giving meth that led to inmate Jason Garreau’s overdose death on May 15 at the State Penitentiary—Attorney General Marty Jackley will speak at 11 a.m. in Sioux Falls to announce more charges tied to inmate deaths and a prison riot.  KELOLAND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consultants say a proposed downtown convention center would need between 300—400 new hotel rooms because only 297 are within a 15-minute walk; they met on June 24th to update studies on current demand and capacity. The report projects the project will boost local economic impact and create about 278 full-time jobs—funding and management plans are being finalized in the coming weeks.  SiouxFalls.Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Sioux Falls school board voted Monday night to opt out of a tax limitation of ($2.1M) for 10 years so the district can raise extra operating funds from 2026 to 2035. The board noted the move will not affect property taxes and may be referred to voters if 5 percent sign a petition within 20 days.  Argus Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Passenger rail advocates from All Aboard Northwest are touring South Dakota to share the Federal Railroad Administration’s recommendations and show supporters how to urge Congress for Amtrak funding. The Train Trek series began Monday in Sioux Falls, continued Tuesday in Lincoln County, and is holding a meeting in Fort Pierre today — with two more events planned for Thursday in Wall and Rapid City.  KTIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials confirmed West Nile virus in a mosquito pool in Minnehaha County on Tuesday — the first detection in 2025. Residents are advised to use bug spray and limit outdoor activities at dusk to lower infection risk.  KELOLAND
  • A health policy report warned that roughly 20,000 South Dakotans may lose health insurance if the tax bill passes and enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits expire+ the tax bill alone is projected to add about 12,000 uninsured people. Current figures show an uninsured rate of 10.4% for those under 65+ these changes have raised concerns about maintaining coverage in the state.  Argus Leader

  • Seven homes sold over one million dollars during the week of June 2 based on records from Minnehaha and Lincoln counties.
