COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The new McKennan Park wading pool opened yesterday after a $4.4 million renovation added a zero-depth entry, slides, and spray features — the updated bathhouse also welcomes local families with free admission and summer hours from 1-5 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m.  Argus Leader
  • A pirate-themed, black-lit miniature golf course opened at 1503 E. 10th St. in east Sioux Falls on May 29, offering 18 holes and an arcade with 17 self-redemption games (owned by Theresa and Justin Kor).  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Private donations helped extend the Sioux Falls recreation trail by one mile, completing the Big Sioux River Trail Corridor project at Lien Park from North Cliff Avenue to Bahnson Avenue. The project added a new multi-use trail plus the city's first elevated boardwalk along the river.  City of Sioux Falls

BUSINESS NEWS

  • GoodSpirits Fine Wine and Liquor, a community fixture on 41st and Minnesota since 1998, will close later this summer, ending nearly 30 years of local service and leaving residents to wonder what will replace it.  KXRB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Vatican denied an appeal by parents to keep Christ the King Elementary School open after its closure was announced on Oct. 10. Families were notified on May 29 and school operations ended on May 15.  Argus Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State child services reported that new kinship care rules increased licensed Native foster homes from 93 in July to 134 in late February during a virtual advisory council meeting on Wednesday. Tribal leaders hope streamlined licensing will help more families provide kinship care.  Argus Leader
  • Starting Monday, June 1, West 12th Street Bridge traffic will run on one lane in each direction as crews begin phase two of repairs that aim to extend the bridge’s lifespan. The work is set to last two to three weeks and drivers are advised to allow extra travel time.  KXRB
  • Businessman Toby Doeden said a July 2024 event in Butler, Pennsylvania — where a political rally stirred his resolve — spurred him to run for governor as he now holds campaign events in Sioux Falls and leads early polls.  Argus Leader
