  • McNally’s Pub will reopen on Tuesday, June 3rd at 6211 S. Old Village Place — the venue will serve cold beers and Irish-inspired dishes on its outdoor patio and is hiring under new ownership.  KXRB
  • The Human Bean, an Oregon-based franchise, opened its new coffee shop at 2801 East Jackson Street in southeast Sioux Falls on Thursday—customers can now visit Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.  KELOLAND

CRIME NEWS

  • Marc Best, a 29-year-old inmate serving sentences for aggravated assault, inmate assault and simple assault on law enforcement, died May 28th in comfort care at the Jameson Annex in Sioux Falls—marking the ninth DOC death this year—while protesters gathered outside today as Attorney General Marty Jackley noted three open death investigations.  KELOLAND
  • South Dakota corrections officials dismantled a drug smuggling ring that used counterfeit packages and visitor smuggling to bring drugs into prisons—three inmate overdose deaths were linked to the ring and on May 27, five inmates were stabbed in a gang-related assault at the Jameson Annex, prompting new security measures and non-contact visits.  KXRB
  • On May 27, multiple inmates were injured in alleged gang-related assaults at the penitentiary's Jameson Annex, with about 10 injured including five with stab wounds and three taken to Sioux Falls hospitals, plus an inmate died on May 28 from causes not linked to the attacks as authorities review the incident for possible prosecution.  Argus Leader

  • South Dakota native Skylar Bolks will ride 1,000 miles this summer on his Jokes and Spokes comedy tour as he plans 13 shows in eastern towns — starting with his June 5 kickoff in Worthing and leading up to RAGBRAI in mid-July. This tour will combine his passion for biking with his talent for stand-up comedy.  KXRB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roger Chase, a former legislator who chaired the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, has been named executive director of the state Farm Service Agency by USDA, while Lorraine Polak, a public servant with over 30 years of experience, will lead South Dakota Rural Development as announced Tuesday. The appointments are expected to boost support for local farmers and rural communities.  Argus Leader
  • Today, 18 lawmakers in Pierre will review a report on the Future Fund—detailing former Gov. Noem's last-minute allocations before she left office—for new funding decisions that include $15 million for the CJ/Schwans facility in Sioux Falls and increased support for scholarship and apprenticeship programs.  KELOLAND
