Al Schoeneman retired after more than 50 years in the lumber business and his farewell party last week honored his role in the Sioux Falls community—he supported local non-profits and Eagle Scout projects that built a lasting legacy.

His store, a local staple since the 1970s, helped shape community growth and set a strong example of giving back.

On Memorial Day, visitors gathered at Veterans’ Memorial Park in north-central Sioux Falls to honor fallen servicemen, with Allen Johnson remembering his brother from Vietnam and Jim Dyer paying tribute to his late Marine.

The park—located near Terrace Park—is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Sioux Falls veteran Darrell Williamson and 84 other honored veterans flew to Washington on May 6 with Midwest Honor Flight to visit memorials including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Williamson and fellow veteran Steve Tinklenberg said the trip made them feel honored + deeply moved as they remembered those who gave their lives.

Sioux Falls tourism is banking on new attractions and value pricing—like free concerts at Levitt at the Falls and updated patios at The Steel District—to draw visitors this summer while hotel managers note strong bookings and future rebookings through 2028.

The Sioux Falls Police Department showcased car #1776 last Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

The decorated vehicle—displaying American flag graphics, armed soldiers and helicopters—paid tribute to veterans and recognized their sacrifices.

The Sanford Sports Complex spans over 500 acres and offers new artificial turf baseball fields along with top-notch training facilities that serve over a thousand athletes each week—youth sports benefit from programs like school field trips and scholarship opportunities.

More expansion is planned with apartments, stores, and hotels to build on the complex's role in our community.
