ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Tourism officials noted fewer visitors and reduced revenue are concerns this season due to high costs and uncertain economic trends — early May meetings and lower hotel occupancy in Sioux Falls signal a softer outlook until major events boost bookings. Major attractions like the Black Hills Bluegrass Festival in June and the Sturgis rally in August are expected to drive increased travel — though many plan to spend cautiously. Argus Leader
- ➤ Gas prices in South Dakota dropped by four cents per gallon to an average of $2.93—lowest since 2021—giving local drivers a break as they plan road trips this Memorial Day weekend. KXRB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sioux Falls Councilman David Barranco announced his run for state auditor on May 23 after serving as audit committee chair and leading A+ audits during his three-year term; his campaign promises to build on tax cuts and efficient management as his city council term ends next year—he is the first candidate to join the race ahead of the Nov 3 election. Argus Leader
- ➤ Two South Dakota law enforcement agencies—the Division of Criminal Investigation and Highway Patrol—applied for ICE’s 287(g) program under the Task Force Model to add immigration enforcement to their daily duties. If approved, these groups will join Minnehaha and Hughes Sheriff's Offices in working with federal officials to remove illegal immigrants and address violent crimes. KELOLAND
- ➤ Task force members said a new men’s prison must meet staff and inmate needs as they review a study that recommends a 1,500 to 1,700 bed facility and are evaluating potential sites. Local officials oppose sites in Sioux Falls while some lawmakers favor alternatives outside the city (Senate Bill 246 spurred longer mandatory sentences), and the task force will soon recommend a project to the Legislature. - ➤ A study by Veterans United Home Loans ranked Sioux Falls fourth among over 500 markets for veterans to live – with Rapid City rated ninth – and local veterans officials praised the city’s strong network of services.
