  • South Dakota News Watch has hired Molly Wetsch—a native of Sioux Falls who grew up in farming communities and the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation—to cover rural and Native American stories beginning July 7 as she will live downtown and travel the state under the Report for America program. News Watch is also hiring a statehouse investigative reporter to cover state government in Pierre.  South Dakota News Watch

  • Beau Vondra has joined Fernson Brewing Company as Director of Food & Beverage Operations to launch Totally Rad Eats, a new food venture that will offer pizzas, pretzels and snacks at The Brewery and Fernson Downtown in Sioux Falls + the company said more details will be announced soon as they build the kitchen and finalize the menu.  KELOLAND
  • Uptown Cheapskate opens today at the Western Mall at 9 a.m.—dedicated shoppers are planning to camp out for early access to the upscale thrift store that sells trendy used clothing, shoes and accessories. Franchisee Alexa Goodroad said the store will resume buying items and expects a busy back-to-school season with more inventory added at both this location and its sister store Kid to Kid.  SiouxFalls.Business

  • Levitt at the Falls is preparing for free outdoor concerts today despite recent wind and rain as staff clean the venue, set up new entrances, and work to fill volunteer spots — with new operations manager Jeff Venekamp booking over 100 acts and securing a soda and water delivery for concessions. The team is focused on ensuring the first show runs smoothly.  KELOLAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Since 2015, registered in-home day cares in South Dakota decreased by half with only 350+ remaining in 2024. Larger licensed centers grew slightly, but the total number of care providers declined by one-third+ amid ongoing staff shortages and low wages.  South Dakota News Watch

  • Sioux Falls experienced a 2.7% increase in April sales tax revenue with a year-to-date growth of only 0.8% as city finance director Shawn Pritchett warned that slow growth in multiple sectors will necessitate budget cuts and long-term adjustments—further impacted by anticipated federal and state revenue losses.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • Mayor Rick Larsen is guiding Valley Springs' growth with new housing, planned retail sites and updated town planning—aimed at keeping its small-town feel; he said local partners are helping with grants and planning and the town will host AutoMania on June 28 to boost community amenities.  SiouxFalls.Business

  • Sanford Health opened a new food pantry in MB 3 on its main campus two weeks ago to help patients with food insecurity. The Kid’s Kitchen has already served between 50—70 families weekly by giving two to three meals per person with donated hygiene products.  KELOLAND
