COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Sioux Falls broke ground yesterday on a renovation at McKennan Park to update its wading pool with a new bathhouse, zero depth entry, spray features, shade structures, landscaping and a sculpture honoring Helen McKennan. The project, funded in part by Pierce and Barbara McDowell + it will keep the pool closed during construction until it reopens free for the 2026 summer swim season.  City of Sioux Falls

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The original Taco John's at 1420 W. 41st St, which opened in 1971, is set to close around mid-July as the building is too old to upgrade. Staff will move to a new location in Tea expected to open mid-to-late July — and the property will be listed for sale.  SiouxFalls.Business

CRIME NEWS

  • A Sioux Falls man aged 57 was sentenced today to 10 years in federal prison for attempting to entice a 15 year old girl on Facebook—law enforcement revealed she was an undercover agent and he also faces five years of supervised release plus a requirement to register as a sex offender.  KELOLAND
  • South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said investigators are examining three inmate deaths, including those of Jason Garreau and Joshua Arrow—found on Thursday and Sunday—after early tests indicated the deaths likely resulted from overdoses rather than natural causes.  KELOLAND
  • Officials at the Minnehaha Courthouse said that last year crime in the county rose by 11% with misdemeanors up 14% and homicides growing from 1 to 12—Judge Houwman noted that drug-related violence from meth and fentanyl along with issues from repeat offenders have put added pressure on the system.  KELOLAND

  • Sioux Falls is stepping up mosquito monitoring as recent rains help them breed—city crews will treat standing water and start spraying in high-risk areas beginning early June.  KXRB

  • After four years of debate over CO2 pipeline applications, carbon sequestration is now tied to the Federal Reconciliation Bill. Local leaders and landowners urged Representative Johnson today to remove the 45Q tax credit—citing land rights concerns related to eminent domain.  KTIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Traffic and parking at Sanford USD Medical Center were affected when road improvements began May 20, adding two lanes for drop-offs and valet service near Medical Building 3. The work will last about three months and drivers are urged to allow extra time as congestion is expected during construction — especially with more vehicles anticipated when the Orthopedic Hospital opens in January.  SiouxFalls.Business
