  • Gage Matzen, a man from Tea, South Dakota, began a 4,200-mile bike ride on sabbatical from his engineering job to support veterans in the Sioux Falls area — he has ridden 550 miles so far while riding through daily storms in the Appalachian Mountains. His fundraiser passed $5,000 — and he will raise his goal to $10,000 to boost help for the local Veterans Community Project.  KTIV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • FedEx Freight began operating in its new, bigger Sioux Falls facility at Foundation Park with a 76-door building — an upgrade from its old 49-door site — that has extra space for growth. The company said the modern site will boost freight services and create local jobs.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall affecting over 280,000 Ford and Lincoln vehicles in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota—models include the F-150, Bronco, Expedition, and Navigator, with owner notifications scheduled for May 26 and free repairs provided.  KXRB

  • Deuel School District was locked down Monday morning because of an indirect threat of a potential school shooter—after a thorough search nothing was found—so deputies and Game Fish and Parks officers stayed at the school for the rest of the day.  KELOLAND

  • Hollie and Brock Scott will open Ark Academy at 3309 E. 26th St in the final Apple Tree building to care for infants through pre-kindergarten with low staff ratios and start care mid-June after renovations—an open house is planned for early June.  SiouxFalls.Business

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • AccuWeather forecasts that this summer will be hotter than normal in South Dakota with temperatures expected to be three degrees above average and nearly the entire state facing moderate to high drought risk—Sioux Falls already saw high temperatures reach the upper-80s in May, a trend that may lead to higher air conditioning costs and increased heat stress. This forecast implies that residents should be prepared for a challenging summer ahead.  Argus Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state-appointed group said the state's 1881 prison is overcrowded with 751 inmates in a space meant for 426 and warned conditions will get worse without a new facility. They recommended a new 1,728-bed facility within 30 minutes of Sioux Falls (ten location ideas have been submitted) and noted that the 22-member task force (set to finish its work this summer before a special legislative session on July 22) will review its next steps.  KXRB

  • Bryn Chivers, a Welsh rugby coach at Wayne State, downsized to Centerville after a life-changing visit to a local donut shop.
