  • Local entrepreneur Owen Monahan, owner of Thrift Heat Vintage, is joining with downtown small business owners to launch The Second Saturday Market; the event will debut on May 17 near Remedy Brewing Co.’s patio and run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 401 E. Eighth St. with over 25 vendors + five food trucks offering live music and activities for all ages.  SiouxFalls.Business
  • EmBe Downtown will host the Spring Refresh Your Closet Sale on Friday, May 16th and Saturday, May 17th with prices on clothing and accessories ranging from $3 to $25 and a Saturday morning bag sale where you can fill a plastic bag for $35 — all funds will benefit the Dress for Success program — which supports career coaching and interview training for women.  KXRB

  • The Exercise Coach, a new fitness business aimed at helping older adults exercise safely with coach-led 20-minute sessions using Exerbotics equipment, will open in July in the lower level of the IMA Building at 6709 S.   • On May 14, Vanguard Hospitality partnered with the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe by buying buffalo meat for its Sioux Falls restaurants—this helps the tribe manage its 135 buffalo on 320 acres. The lean meat is shared with tribe members and restaurants will soon sell bison burgers and buffalo steaks—actions that support local food and heritage.  SiouxFalls.Business

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 3, officers from Sioux Falls and other agencies issued over 180 citations and arrested more than 20 people during a patrol to stop street racing — police said they will hold five patrols from now until August.  KXRB

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Washington Pavilion is seeking volunteers aged 13 or older to help with the Lallycooler music festival at Great Bear Ski Valley—volunteers can sign up online for the event scheduled on July 11th and 12th.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nan Kelly and Elizabeth Duffy were elected to the Sioux Falls School District Board of Education on May 13 with vote totals of 1,424 and 1,557 from 2,738 ballots cast at a 2% turnout. They will begin their three-year terms on July 14—while the district canvasses results on May 27 and candidates file financial interest statements by May 28 with campaign finance reports due by June 24.  Argus Leader
  • Today, motorists on Veterans Parkway face lane closures between Arrowhead Parkway and 26th Street for concrete repairs—curb, gutter, and joint resealing will occur with at least one lane open in each direction. Drivers on South Louise Avenue near 69th Street will see an outside southbound lane closed for Xcel Energy utility work starting May 16, with the lane expected to reopen by Friday evening.  KXRB

  • Residents can enjoy a scenic backroad trip from Sioux Falls to Rapid City that passes through small towns, farmland, and views of the Missouri River. Travelers will have chances to stop in Platte for a meal + fill up on gas in Winner or Mission along this varied route.  KXRB

  • Iowa State Cyclones will return to the Sanford Pentagon on Nov. 10 to play a nonconference game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, marking Iowa State’s second visit and the Bulldogs’ debut while ticket details will be announced later. This matchup is one of four NCAA Division I events scheduled at the Pentagon this season — Nebraska will face Oklahoma on Nov. 15, Nebraska women will play North Dakota State on Nov. 16, and South Dakota State will meet Wyoming on Dec. 15.  KELOLAND
