- ➤ Experience Sioux Falls recognized several visitor industry standouts at its annual Visitor Industry Luncheon held Tuesday, May 5, at the Sioux Falls Convention Center — the event honored winners in hospitality and leadership, including Mayor TenHaken and outgoing council members, in front of over 550 attendees. - ➤ Hy Vee is honoring veterans in May with round-up donation matching up to $100,000 & free weekly coffee on Wednesdays at local stores. The company will offer a free breakfast on May 20 and later partner with the USO to distribute 5,000 care packages. Argus Leader
- ➤ Maguire hosted an SBA Manufacturing Industry Listening Session and Regulatory Roundtable at its Sioux Falls campus on May 6, where manufacturers and policymakers discussed regulatory challenges and growth opportunities and recognized Gene Jones Jr. and Scott Jones as South Dakota’s 2026 Small Business Champions. - ➤ The Great Plains Zoo will host its Summer Celebration on Saturday, May 23 from 9 AM to 5 PM, offering zookeeper chats, carousel rides + tasty treats for families to enjoy. Visitors will explore 45 acres of animal exhibits and participate in fun activities during the event. KXRB

- ➤ Starting next school year, schools in Sioux Falls will introduce the Emily’s Hope substance use curriculum for students from kindergarten through high school, funded by $518,000 from the opioid settlement fund + $100,000 from a community grant; the program will help teachers and trusted adults lead age-appropriate prevention conversations. - ➤ State Board of Educational Standards will drop Common Core Math in favor of common sense math in July 2027 to boost test scores after previous results fell short. - ➤ Wildlife officials have updated elk hunting rules to manage crop damage. State residents can obtain unlimited East River prairie elk licenses outside Crow Creek Reservation and 50 additional licenses in Custer Park for a season running from September to December. KXRB
- ➤ Sioux Falls reminds residents to follow water conservation rules including specific hours and odd-even guidelines for lawn watering, and to maintain grass height while obtaining permits for new lawns + tree planting.
