  • Three individuals connected to Hibachi Grill & Supreme Buffet were indicted on April 8 on charges of harboring illegal workers in a labor trafficking case in Sioux Falls — they allegedly bought residences for workers, deducted rent from cash wages, and used threats of deportation while the restaurant closed that day but plans to reopen.  SiouxFalls.Business

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Sioux Falls metro kept its low unemployment rate at 2.1 percent in February with 3,603 people without jobs—matching January’s count. Job openings dropped to 11,425 from 11,898 last month as the labor force edged up to 175,138.  SiouxFalls.Business

  • Native American groups pressed for a delay in revising the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings — calling for tribal consultations that had not occurred — yet the South Dakota Education Standards Board approved the revised standards in its Monday Rapid City meeting following Education Secretary Joseph Graves’ review. The board also adopted first-ever computer science standards for grades K-8 and revised English language arts standards.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly $10 million in federal spending cuts have reduced funds for schools, hospitals, and other local agencies across South Dakota—Children’s Home Society lost $325,000 for a planned new service while Feeding South Dakota saw a $10,000 grant cut and faces up to a 14% reduction in food as USDA funding was halted. Both organizations said they will review and adjust their programs in light of the changes.  KELOLAND

  • This Thursday night the Denny Sanford Premier Center will host the 8th annual Big Stars and Pink Guitars fundraiser—raising money for breast cancer research and patient support by auctioning 20 pink guitars signed by music icons.
