COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly three dozen skilled volunteers arrived in Sioux Falls on April 2nd to help renovate Call to Freedom’s new headquarters for survivors of human trafficking. They will work until April 16th to complete a project worth about $250,000—supporting more services for survivors.  KELOLAND
  • Over the weekend, female firefighters at Ignite Academy led a training program where 19 hopefuls learned CPR, ran obstacle courses, and watched a car fire demonstration—sparking new interest in firefighting. The program also taught fire behavior and explained the hiring process while offering insights on mental health support.  KELOLAND
  • Changemakers Project meets every Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Good Natured to help local residents plan projects that make Sioux Falls safer and cleaner. Former city council candidate Jordan Deffenbaugh leads the effort, and members borrow tools from the Sioux Falls Tool Library—joining Wednesday work sessions and monthly forums to build a stronger city.  KELOLAND
  • A column published April 13 reported that Sioux Falls counted 614 homeless individuals with the unsheltered population rising to 60 from 37 last year as outreach teams built trust with residents. The report also outlined how Rockford achieved functional zero (meaning chronic homelessness is rare) and that local officials are studying similar strategies.  SiouxFalls.Business

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A single-vehicle crash along US Highway 18 — four miles west of Gregory — on Sunday morning around 10 a.m. left one 15-year-old dead and another critically injured when the car hit a construction zone, spun and rolled; the unbelted passenger was thrown from the vehicle and both girls were airlifted to Sioux Falls.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are starting work today in McKennan Park by removing the old wading pool and bathhouse in central Sioux Falls. The $4.7 million project is part of the Capital Improvement Plan — it will build a new pool and bathhouse in June while adding a donated concession stand, sun shading, and a sculpture.  KELOLAND
  • State government boards and commissions have public meetings scheduled this week—today in Rapid City and Sioux Falls and then from April 15th to April 18th in other locations including Deadwood and Pierre. Some sessions will be held by teleconference while others meet in person, and meeting times may change due to weather or other reasons.  KELOLAND
