COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Furniture Mission will hold its ChAIRity Gala on Tuesday, April 15 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center in Exhibit Halls 1 and 2 with doors opening at 5 p.m. and events running until 9 p.m.—attendees will enjoy a three-course meal, game show entertainment, DJ music, and shopping for repurposed furniture while funds raised help provide gently used items for families in need.  KXRB
  • The Downtown Sioux Falls Easter Egg Hunt is planned for Saturday, April 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Families can enjoy free admission & special deals, face painting, live music, and other treats at the event downtown.  KXRB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle crashed into a day care on Wednesday morning at 37th Street and Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls—no injuries were reported and the facility closed for at least two weeks while emergency crews responded.  KELOLAND

CRIME NEWS

  • A man allegedly threatened a store clerk with a handgun at Casey’s on 500 N. Kiwanis Avenue on Sunday, tried to steal money and liquor, and police later arrested 24-year-old Aaron Christopher McBride after identifying him through witness tips and a tattoo — he now faces charges of first degree robbery, aggravated assault and second degree petty theft.  KELOLAND
  • Hibachi Grill and Supreme Buffet owner Hui Weng, manager Min Lin and employee Jin Ju Pan were charged with conspiring to harbor and aid undocumented immigrants in a scheme that provided housing, cash payments and meals in Sioux Falls—leading to the restaurant’s temporary closure and their detention in Minnehaha County Jail.  Argus Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the South Dakota Highway Patrol announced it is hiring nine new troopers to boost its presence in Sioux Falls — applicants must complete law enforcement training in Pierre followed by a ten-week field training process. Applications will be accepted until May 2, and officers will investigate crashes, remove impaired drivers, and enforce state traffic laws.  KXRB
  • City leaders announced that starting May 1 drivers will be able to pay for downtown parking by phone and a new ordinance will be enforced on Phillips Avenue to keep a safe clearance behind vehicles. Meter enforcement hours will be extended to include Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—each meter will show a location code for a mobile transaction with a small convenience fee while coins remain an option.  City of Sioux Falls

  • Retirees returning to Sioux Falls have moved into Willowbrook Village— the city’s first fully build-to-rent community with detached single-family homes and all services included.
