  • Yesterday, prosecutors stopped calling witnesses in the trial of former DSDS employee Lonna Carroll—accused of stealing more than $1.7 million over 13 years from child protection—and after defense CPA Logan Aukes spoke about weak checks, Judge Christina Klinger denied a request for an acquittal before the jury left for closing arguments.  KELOLAND

  • USD Discovery District opened its first building in Sioux Falls this week. The 50,000-square-foot facility has lab space—designed for biotech, research and commercialization—and three tenants, including a nutrient testing company, have moved in to boost workforce development.  KTIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, South Dakota energy officials reported that the federal rollback of clean energy rules has sparked debate over how quickly coal plants should be retired and wind energy— which produced 55% of net power generation in 2023—should be expanded. Public Utility Commissioners warned that an overly rapid transition might risk grid reliability during harsh winter hours, and some companies plan to retire coal plants by 2030 as regional policies continue to differ.  KTIV

  • South Dakota has added nine new law enforcement officers from several departments after they completed a three-week Drug Recognition Expert Class to spot drug-impaired drivers—training included two weeks in a classroom and one week evaluating subjects in Sacramento. The enhanced expertise will help state agencies improve efforts to reduce impaired driving across South Dakota.  KXRB
  • Gov. Larry Rhoden’s Prison Project Reset task force held its second day of meetings yesterday at the South Dakota Military Alliance in Sioux Falls where officials heard presentations on prison facilities and hired consultant Arrington Watkins on a contract up to $729,000—members had toured a proposed site in Lincoln County amid strong opposition and will meet again on April 29 in Springfield.   KELOLAND
