South Dakota farmers from Lake Preston are sending at least 22 trucks of hay to Ashby throughout the week to assist Nebraska ranchers impacted by wildfires.
Organized by local crews, the drive shows strong regional support.
Sioux Falls residents can join free Earth Month events in April including DIY Recycled Books on April 15, Birdhouse Creations on April 18 at Westside Recreation Center, Earth Day festivals on April 24 at Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum, and park cleanups on April 25 & education at Siouxland Libraries.
Rita Edwards and Mark Millage joined South Dakota News Watch board as new directors, replacing former members.
Edwards brings law expertise from Davenport Evans Lawyers and nonprofit board experience, while Millage offers a media background from KELO-TV and Furniture Mart USA’s community relations role.

On April 2, the SBA honored local business leaders by naming Chris O’Bryan of LaCreek Development as Small Business Person of the Year.
The award will be celebrated during National Small Business Week May 3 to 9, recognizing winners in export, manufacturing, rural, veteran, women-owned and young entrepreneur categories.
The former David’s Bridal building near 41st Street and I-29, empty since its closure last October, may soon host Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers — construction bid requests are due by April 14, which could give fans a local option instead of a long drive to Omaha.

Untitled.10 hosted a free pop-up art exhibit at 921 E.
Eighth St. on Saturday, Apr. 2 that featured local artist work including contributions from Tyson Schultz, Levi Sternburg and Kenzie Shubert — demolition began after the event as plans are set for a new bar to open later this year.
🎓 Education
USD Sanford School of Medicine is moving its Doctor of Medicine program from Vermillion to Sioux Falls sooner than planned after Sanford Health provided leased space and Avera plans classroom support.
The program will use the 50,000 sqft Talley Building, with renovations starting this summer for a summer 2028 move.

Governor Larry Rhoden announced on Thursday, Apr.
2 that South Dakota allocated over $7.8 million from opioid settlements to boost prevention and recovery services statewide. The funds, drawn from legal settlements with pharmaceutical companies, are part of a larger projected share of about $70 million through 2038.

Avera Health is advancing cancer care by using oncologists who specialize in specific cancer types to offer personalized treatment and clinical trial options for patients.
